About the Music Department

The Music Department at King’s is one of the most prestigious in the UK, ranked as one of the top 10 music departments in the country (Complete University Guide 2016). We offer high-level teaching programmes and a flourishing research culture in performance, composition, musicology, ethnomusicology, sound studies, jazz and popular music studies, and music and science. We benefit in particular from long-standing links with the Royal Academy of Music and the School of Oriental and African Studies.

We welcome students from all over the world. If you are accepted for study here, you will be working closely with staff who believe in the central role of music in today's culture. We teach our students to engage with innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and expanding on musical practice and experience. Our distinguished faculty and team of associated researchers aim to produce well-rounded musicians who will be able to use their expertise in a wide variety of professional and academic contexts, and who will critically reflect on - and contribute to - society by means of music.
We have a relatively small, highly selective undergraduate intake each year, and one of the largest graduate communities in the country. You will meet first-rate students at different stages of their careers. The Department hosts a variety of events including weekly lectures, conferences, seminars, workshops and colloquia open to the public, where our students get the opportunity to encounter widely recognised scholars and musicians.

A particular strength at King's is performance. Instrumental lessons with staff from the Royal Academy of Music are available to all undergraduate students. At the Royal Academy, our students study either with an Academy professor or with an advanced postgraduate supervised by a professor, collaborate with performers of the highest calibre, and work alongside many who are already active in the profession. At King’s, there are great opportunities to participate in concerts and chamber music groups. Our students also play a leading part in the King's College Symphony Orchestra and Chapel Choir. As part of their course, our graduate composers participate in workshops with the professional ensemble Lontano
