Research in Music

Research at King¹s College London is enormously varied. A glance at our staff webpages and at our research profile will show that each of us has different specialisms and areas of interest: in composition, performance, ethnomusicology, jazz, music and science, critical theory, and Western music history of many periods. The range of areas results in a lively research atmosphere and also contributes to the variety of teaching we can offer. We have particular strengths in opera studies, Western music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and composition.

At the centre of our research culture is the colloquium series, which meets once a week during term time, and which hosts a distinguished speaker, sometimes from abroad, sometimes from nearer home.

In addition, there are numerous more specialised forums in which staff, graduate students and visitors can come together for discussion and debate. We also benefit from several research centres and other activities located within the Department, making it a rich environment in which to conduct research.
