Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES)
PTES is the only national survey to gather taught postgraduate students’ opinions about their experience at university and college. It is run by the Higher Education Academy (HEA). The PTES has been designed to help universities enhance the experiences of postgraduate taught students by collecting and acting upon feedback from current students. The survey is an online questionnaire and consists of a number of multiple choice questions. All data collected in the survey is held anonymously and securely. This is an inclusive survey and we are interested in all student feedback, regardless of mode of study (full-time, part-time, distance learners or campus-based learners) or fee status (Home/EU or overseas). We are particularly interested in feedback from minority groups. The survey results are not made public but are used to identify where improvements can be made.
It takes just 10 minutes to complete and all results are anonymous .
Why is it important?
The results are carefully considered by your department and the rest of the university to identify areas where improvements could be made and efforts targeted to further enhance postgraduate degree programmes. Results of the survey are used to inform sector bodies and policy makers about the experiences students can expect across the country.
How do I take part?
Eligible students will receive an email when the next survey is released (likely to be 2019).
Responding to Results
Highlights of 2016 results from Arts & Humanities students include:
- 94% agreed that staff were enthusiastic about what they were teaching
- 82% agreed that their research skills had developed during their course
- 89% agreed they had been able to access IT resources when needed
- 73% were happy with the support received for planning their dissertation/major project
In response to comments and feedback from students in the last survey results, the Faculty and College have taken forward a number of initiatives:
- Significantly improved the provision of new student work and social space in the Virginia Woolf Building, including 35 new PCs
- We've worked at programme level to improve the availability of resources and continued the roll-out of online reading lists.
- Worked with departments to embed the use and effectiveness of online feedback and ensure feedback deadlines are met
- Taken action to reduce maximum class sizes on larger programmes
- Improved careers and employability provision and worked with departments to ensure events are relevant and promoted effectively
