MPhilStud Formative Assessment, Summative Assessment and Thesis

MPhil Studies Submission Deadlines

You must write 6 essays (2 essays in 3 different topic options, each essay is 5,000 words) and a thesis (30,000 words) in total as part of your degree requirements.

You must submit drafts of essays of 5,000 words each ('formative essays') on two different nominated dates set over the two years of your degree. You receive feedback on these essays shortly after submission. The final versions of your essays ('summative essays') must all be handed in together in May of your 2nd year.

Feedback is provided when formative work is submitted by the relevant deadlines.

Students must also hand in a 'kernel' (10,000 words of thesis research) at the same time as they hand in their first set of formative essays.

Students must also submit their chosen summative essay and thesis titles for approval by a further nominated date during the second year of your degree.

The marking criteria can be found here.

Submission instructions

  1. Please submit formative essays, thesis kernel and summative essays through KEATS.

Note that for formative essays and summative essays, word limits apply to the main text, quotes, references, footnotes and appendices. Your bibliography is excluded from the word count.

For formative essays, please include on the first page of each one:
    - the title
    - the topic area
    - your name
NB The thesis kernel should be marked "thesis kernel" for the topic area.

  2. Please submit the thesis to the Examinations and Awards Office (Room 7.29; James Clerk Maxwell Building). The process for submitting the MPhilStud thesis is similar to submitting a PhD thesis. Please see the details here:
    http://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/services/examinations/researchdegrees/candidates/index.aspx
As with the PhD thesis, you will need to fill in the RD1 form.

Note that for the thesis, the word count includes notes and appendices, but not the bibliography, see regulation: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/services/examinations/researchdegrees/candidates/binding.aspx
  3. Please note that the thesis cannot be submitted by candidates unless they have submitted their summative essays and received passing marks
