Philosophy Foundation Hardship Fund

What is the Philosophy Foundation Hardship Fund?

The Fund was established by Emma and Peter Worley. Its purpose is to offer some help to students in the Department who are experiencing financial difficulties. The resources available to the fund are limited and it is not designed to offer full scholarships. The amount granted to any one student will not normally exceed £250.

Who can apply?

The Fund is open to all students who are doing a taught degree with a named and substantial Philosophy component (i.e. students pursuing joint honours programmes) and who are experiencing financial hardship.

How can I apply?

Please send to the departmental Office ( a short personal statement of the reasons for the application along with some supportive evidence, e.g. a bank statement, a police report (in cases of financial need resulting from theft or loss), etc.

The application will be considered by the Senior Tutor, the MA Director of Studies and the Research Students Committee Chair, with final approval by the Head of Department.

Applications can be submitted at any time, but decisions will normally be made at three points in the year (the Wednesday of Week 6 of each term). The Department reserves the right to make more immediate decisions and allocations in urgent cases.

The resources available are limited and, in any one annual cycle, funds will be allocated until they are depleted.
