First-year research seminar

The first-year research seminar is mandatory for all first year MPhilSt, MPhil/PhD and PhD research students in the Department.
The year begins with some basic training in philosophy research (typically, by working through a key text in contemporary philosophy). Later in the year, students take turns to present articles and papers of their choosing, explaining the significance of the piece and opening a discussion of the key themes.
The group's function is to give research students the chance to practice presenting their ideas to an informed, though perhaps not expert, audience (an essential skill for those pursuing an academic career). Given the range of research student interests and projects in the Department, the seminar also plays the vital role of giving our research students an awareness of philosophical topics not necessarily directly related to their own research project; we believe this to be an essential component of a good philosophical education.
