The MPhil Seminar is a two-hour weekly seminar that takes place in terms 1 and 2. Attendance at this seminar is mandatory for all first-year MPhil Stud students and for all first-year students on the MPhil/PhD programme. Other PGR students are also welcome to attend.
These seminars will be led by members of the department who will be teaching on topics directly related to their own current research interests. The seminars in one term will concern topics falling within ‘Theoretical Philosophy’ (broadly conceived), and the seminars in the other term will concern topics falling with ‘Practical/Value) Philosophy’ (broadly conceived).
Given the range of research interests and projects in the Department, these seminars play the vital role of giving our research students an awareness of philosophical topics not necessarily directly related to their own research project; we believe this to be an essential component of a good philosophical education.
First-year research students will be required to write a 4,000-word formative essay for this seminar, and they will receive written feedback within four weeks. MPhil Stud students may, if they wish, use these essays as a basis for one of their option essays.
