Department Governance

The Department of Theology & Religious Studies is governed by a number of committees constituted by members of the academic staff, administrative staff, and representatives from the student body.

Members of staff also carry out a number of administrative support roles within the Department, which you can find listed on the Key Contacts page (link to Student Handbook).

Department committees

NB All committee meetings are by invitation only. Student Representatives are invited to participate in all committees except Assessment Sub-Boards.

Department Education Committee 

The Department Education Committee (DEC) advises the Head of Department on teaching strategy and practice within the Department in matters relating to the undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes.

Departmental Research Students Commitee

The Departmental Research Students Commitee advises the Head of Department on all matters relating to research, including the monitoring of postgraduate research students.

Student-Staff Liaison Committee

The Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) provides a means of communication between staff and students and includes representatives from undergraduate and graduate programmes, and members of staff. Meetings are held three times per year. If you have any suggestions to make regarding the Department – teaching, facilities, student support etc. – please contact your student representative(s).

Undergraduate Assessment Sub-Board

The Undergraduate Assessment Sub-Board is responsible for ensuring that the examination and assessment procedures for which it is responsible are carried out in accordance with the regulations governing the programmes and awards concerned (and other relevant College regulations), and in a fair and impartial manner.

Membership 2018-19

All module convenors are typically internal examiners, and consequently members of the Assessment Sub-Board. The Sub-Board also includes External Examiners.

Postgraduate Assessment Sub-Board

Other meetings and important dates

Department meetings

Department meetings are general staff meetings for the Department, where important matters affecting the whole Department are communicated and discussed. Student representatives are invited to the unreserved business portion of the meeting.

Department meetings will be preceded by a short staff research seminar at 17:00.
