5AATCF01 A World Full of Gods: Religions in Greece, Rome and the Levant

Assessment: One 2,000 coursework (journal) worth 40% and one 2,500 word essay (60%)

Students are reassessed in the failed elements of assessment and by the same methods as the first attempt.

Module Description

An introduction to the study of religion in the ancient Mediterranean world (c.750BCE-250CE). What is religion, and where might it be found? What were the phenomena of antiquity that may be classified as ‘religious’?  This module takes themes from cult and ritual to divination and magic, exploring the beliefs and practices of the peoples of Greece, Rome and the Levant.

Educational Aims

This module will introduce students to a range of different themes and approaches in the study of the religious life in the ancient Mediterranean world (c.750BCE-250 CE). It will explore the theory and method involved in defining the subject of ‘religion’ and the diverse phenomena this term embraces. There will be a consideration of various religious cults, rituals and practices, as well as ideas, practices and settings, and explorations of texts and beliefs that pertain to the organisation of religious life in the worlds of antiquity.  

Learning Outcomes

The module will increase students’ understanding of the range of different phenomena classified as ‘religion’ in antiquity and provide an appreciation of the diversity of religious expressions. A knowledge of the ancient world of the Mediterranean will be gained via an exploration of religion. The module will increase critical thinking through engagement with scholarship on key questions. It will encourage an innovative methods of assessing evidence and making comparative judgements. Academic writing and literacy will be improved by means of course exercises.
