Taught Programmes

Prizes

The Department has a number of prizes awarded to students who have excelled academically or shown substantial progression from one year to the next. These are awarded to fit specific criteria at the Assessment Sub-Board meeting each June.

 

Undergraduate (BA) prizes

Archibald Robertson Prize (books to the value of £150) Offered annually to the best second year student taking the BA in Theology. 
Betty Wood Prize (£100)  Awarded annually to the final year BA student in Religious Studies, taking into account their examination results and contribution to the College. 
Bicknell Prize (books to the value of £80) Awarded annually to the student who gains the second highest marks in the New Testament papers in the final year examinations for the BA in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies [See also Trench Greek Testament Prize] 
Bishop Collins Memorial Prize (books to the value of £65)  Awarded to the student obtaining the highest marks in the Church History papers at the final year examinations for the BA in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies. 
G.F. Woods Prize (£100)  Awarded annually to the student who shall have merited the award on the basis of a paper on Christian Ethics in the final examination for the BA in Theology or in Religious Studies. 
Hanson Prize for the Philosophy of Religion (£50)  Awarded to the student gaining the highest marks in Philosophy of Religion in the BA in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies. 
Mascall Prize for Christian Doctrine (books to the value of £200)  Awarded to the student obtaining the highest marks in the Christian Doctrine papers in the final year examinations for the BA in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies [See also Sellers Prize in Christian Theology]. 
McCaul Hebrew Prize (books to the value of £120)  Awarded to the final year BA student with the best examination results in the study of Hebrew. 
Paul Caudwell Prize (books to the value of £100)  Awarded annually to the student in the first-year course in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies who has achieved the best result. 
Oesterley Prize in Old Testament Studies (books to the value of £25) 

Awarded annually to the final year BA student with the best marks in Old Testament Studies.

 
Sellers Prize in Christian Theology (books to the value of £25)  Awarded annually to the final year student with the best marks in the study of Christian Theology [See also Mascall Prize for Christian Doctrine]. 
Shelford BA Prize (books to the value of £200)  Awarded to the best performing BA student in the study of Religion or the Philosophy of Religion throughout their course. 
Trench Greek Testament Prize (books to the value of £180)  Awarded to the student gaining the highest marks in the New Testament papers at the final year examinations for the BA in Theology [See also Bicknell Prize]. 
Whichelow and Knowling Reading Prizes (books to the values of £45 and £42)  Awarded to the students giving the best oral presentations as part of the Independent Study Project (6AAT5000) 
H.H. Scullard Prize (£100) Open to all full-time undergraduate students of Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology and Theology. Awarded annually by the Head of the Department of Classics and the Head of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies on the basis of an essay (normally of not less than 3000 words) submitted at the end of the second semester on a title previously approved by the entrant¹s Head of Department.

Postgraduate MA Prizes

Hanson Prize for Philosophy of Religion (£100)

Awarded annually to the MA student with the best examination results in the study of Philosophy of Religion.

 
Hanson Prize for Christian Ethics (£75) Awarded annually to the MA student with the best examination results in the study of Christian Ethics.
McCaul MA Prize (£200)

Awarded annually to the MA student with the best examination results in the study of the Old Testament.

Relton Prize for Christian Doctrine (books to the value of £60)  Awarded annually to the MA student gaining the highest marks in the study of Christian Doctrine. 
Shelford MA Prize (£250)  Awarded annually to the MA student who has shown the best performance in the study of Religion. 
Ulrich Simon Prize (£75) 

Awarded annually to the MA student with the best overall performance in an MA within the Department of Theology & Religious Studies.
