At King's Arts & Humanities, we research and teach AI skills and ethics — not shortcuts.

In an era of rapid AI growth, the need for a wider perspective than just the technical is increasingly important. The Arts and Humanities promotes and builds lifelong resilience and perspective when any new technology is introduced into society. We bring critical, ethical, compassionate and cultural perspectives to AI. For its development to be safe and inclusive we need to understand how technology is shaped by, and in turn shapes, power structures, identity, and our uniquely human values and experiences.

Our researchers lead on AI innovation, shaping its development, guiding its values, and embedding critical, ethical, cultural, and social insight into its design from the very beginning. We teach our students the underlying principles, promoting a questioning mindset about what constitutes appropriate use of AI, and the skills needed to utilise it for our benefit.

Our research focuses on how we can live well with technology. King's Arts & Humanities has been using this question at the centre of our work for decades.

We developed the world's first Department of Digital Humanities in 1992, are one of the lead hubs of the UK Responsible AI project, and host the Digital Futures Institute among other leading centres of research.
