Katie is Professor of Work and Employment. Previously, she has held posts at the Universities of Sussex, Kent and Kingston, and at London Business School, where she completed her PhD. Her current research focuses on what makes work meaningful, temporality and the experience of work, employee engagement and strategic human resource management. Her research has been funded by grants of almost £1m from the ESRC, CIPD, NIHR, British Academy/Leverhulme and industry. She has recently recently completed a study of purposeful and ethical leadership funded by the CIPD, and her current projects include meaningful work and individuals’ experience of time.

She has published her research widely in peer-reviewed journals such as Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, and Work, Employment and Society. In addition, she has published articles in leading practitioner journals including the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review and Academy of Management Perspectives. She has won a number of awards including an Emerald Literati Prize.

She has been an Associate Editor or Editorial Board member of several academic journals, including Human Resource Management Journal, Work, Employment and Society and Employee Relations. She is lead author of the textbook ‘Strategic Human Resource Management’ (OUP; 2nd Edition) and is co-editor of the ‘Oxford Handbook of Meaningful Work’ due to be published in 2019.

Katie is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the RSA and the HEA, Academic Fellow of the CIPD, and Honorary Fellow of the IES. She has also been a Non-Executive Director of the IPA, and is frequently invited to speak at practitioner conferences. She has run workshops and events for, among others, the European Parliament, European Commission, Atos Consulting, Jelf Group, Grass Roots, CIPD, Pfizer, Sinobridge Consulting, and NHS Employers.
