Changes to where you find information on graduation
We’re making it easier for you to find information and support at King’s. This website content will soon be moving to Student Services Online (self-service.kcl.ac.uk) where you can easily search and browse a comprehensive, up to date range of articles that answer common questions.
Once you have booked your place for your ceremony you can begin to make arrangements for the day. Please take time to read the information below in order to ensure you're ready!
During the booking period, you can amend your ceremony booking in Student Records. You can change your contact details, or the number of tickets you have booked; add any special requirements; request a visa letter; or defer your place.
Once booking has closed you will still be able to view your booking. If you need to amend your details after booking has closed, please contact the Ceremonies & Events Team, quoting your student number.
Please be sure to notify us when you book for your ceremony of any special requirements that you or your guests might have so that we can make appropriate arrangements for you. Please note that the special needs section of the form IS NOT for requests for extra tickets.
If you did not provide details when you made your booking it is vital that you do so as soon as possible. This can be done by re-entering the booking system up until the booking deadline. If you need to notify us of a special need for yourself or your guest after the booking deadline, please contact the Ceremonies & Events Team.

About King's College London Academic Dress
Academic dress must be worn by all presentees, and students/graduates should be in smart dress (no jeans or trainers are allowed).
Gown hire is provided by Ede & Ravenscroft and you can book your gown online or by calling 01223 861854. You must book your gown by approximately three weeks prior to your ceremony.
Most students will receive a King's College London award and will therefore need a King's College London gown. However, if you are expecting to receive a University of London award please contact the Ceremonies & Events Team who will be able to advise on ordering your gown.
The only approved gown supplier for King's College London is Ede and Ravenscroft. Please be wary of alternative gown companies that offer cheaper rates (including Churchill Gowns) as they do not have patents to produce King's College London academic dress.
Mortarboards and hats
In 2007 King’s was granted degree-awarding powers in its own right. One of the impacts of securing its own degree-awarding powers was the need for King’s to design its own academic dress, and we are most grateful to Dame Vivienne Westwood for the major role she played in bringing the academic dress, which is based on a medieval design, up to date. Through her reworking of the traditional robe, Vivienne Westwood hoped to “link the past, the present and the future”. The new King’s academic dress design was approved by the College and does not include a mortarboard.

Gown cost (by qualification)
While mortarboards do not form part of the official academic dress at King’s, they are available for King's students to wear for their graduation photographs, and there is a selection available at the photography booths on graduation days. There is no charge for the use of them.
Alternatively, students may hire mortarboard hats for a small fee for use during the graduation event by contacting the Ede & Ravenscroft Private Hire service on +44 (0)1223 205 617. Please note that as hats do not form part of the official academic dress they are not permitted to be worn when crossing the stage and any students hiring hats will be asked to remove them during the ceremony itself.

Visa assistance letters
You can also purchase a gown. You can purchase your gown online or by calling 01223 861854.
Clergy graduates wishing to purchase a King's hood to be worn with their choir dress should contact email@example.com. Please note that these hoods cannot be worn on the day of the ceremony as they are designed specifically to be worn with choir dress.
If you are unsure as to whether or not you or your guests require a visa please see the UK Visa and Immigration website for a full list of countries that require a visa to enter the United Kingdom.
How to obtain a visa assistance letter:
If you or your guests require visas in order to attend a graduation ceremony, please complete the relevant section on Student Records when you book your place. You can re-enter the task to do this up until the booking deadline.
We endeavour to produce all Visa assistance letters within 5 working days of receiving the request.
Please note: You must book your place at the graduation ceremony before we can produce a visa assistance letter for yourself and you must purchase guest tickets for each of your guests requiring a visa assistance letter before we can produce these for your guests.
Visa assistance letters produced by the Ceremonies & Events Team cannot be used to support a visa extension application, for assistance with this, please contact Student Advice & International Student Support
Receiving your visa assistance letter
If you have requested your letter to be sent in an electronic format (scanned) it will be emailed to the email address you requested in Student Records within 5 working days. Guest visa letters will be emailed subject to the purchase of guest tickets.
If you have requested your letter to be sent via post, you will need to email the Graduation team with the address you would like the letter posted to. Please note we cannot guarantee prompt delivery to overseas addresses.
If you have opted to collect your letter in person, or have nominated someone to collect the letter for you, you can visit the Graduation office any time during our office hours (Monday - Friday, 9-5pm, excluding bank holidays) and we will print it for you.

Refunds and cancellations
For ceremonies held at the Royal Festival Hall:
Your guest tickets will be sent to you as e-tickets via the email you submitted when you booked your tickets online.
Please be aware that in some instances, your KCL email may expire between booking the guest tickets and the date of your ceremony. With this in mind, we ask that you use a personal email address that you will check regularly to ensure that you receive your guest tickets.
If you have notified us in advance of any special requirements that your guests have then your seats will have been assigned with these requirements in mind. All other guest seats are allocated randomly. It is not possible to change your guest seat allocations.
Please do not use the 'special needs' section of the online booking form to request particular seats - this is for details of students and guests with particular access requirements only. Requests for particular seats in this section will not be considered.
For ceremonies held at Southwark Cathedral:
Guest tickets will be collected on the day at the same time as your student ticket.
Seats are not allocated. Space at the Cathedral is extremely limited so we ask guests to please be mindful of other guests and not leave gaps between groups.
