Tier 4 Visas

Change of Circumstances

During your period of studies you may find yourself in a situation where your circumstances change which require you to withdraw from your programme or take a break from it.

For more information about how to go about this and implications it may have for Tier 4 visa holders, please see the following information.

Withdrawals

What is the withdrawal process

Before making a withdrawal request please ensure that you have contacted you department to discuss it with them first.

The withdrawal process is carried out on-line. You should go into Student Records and submit a Change of Circumstances request.

Once you have submitted your request it will first go to the visa team for approval. They may then need to have a brief chat with you first to discuss any implications it may have for your Tier 4 visa. Once they have approved it, it will go to your department. Once they have approved it your request will be actioned and you will be withdrawn from the course.

What does it mean if you hold a Tier 4 visa

If you withdraw from your programme of study and you hold a Tier 4 visa then King’s visa compliance team will make a report to the Home Office to state that you are no longer a current student, your leave will be shortened to 60 days after the date of the report and you will be expected to either leave the UK or to have made an application for leave to remain in the UK under another immigration category.

Interruption

What is the interruption process

Before making an interruption request please ensure that you have contacted you department to discuss it with them first.

The interruption process is carried on-line. You should go into Student Records and submit a Change of Circumstances request.

Once you have submitted your request it will first go to the visa team for approval. They will then need to have a brief chat with you first to discuss any implications it may have for your Tier 4 visa. Once this has happened and they have approved it, it will go to your department. Once they have approved it your request will be actioned and you will be interrupted from the course.

Authorised absence

If you hold a Tier 4 visa it is possible to have an authorised absence or “interruption” of up to 59 days from your programme of study without it having an impact on your visa and King’s being required to report you to UKVI.

The caveat to this 59 day period is that you must still be able to complete your studies within the duration of your current Tier 4 visa. This means that your authorised absence should not lead to you needing to make an extension of your course end date that leads to you needing an extension of your Tier 4 visa.

If you are considering this option you will need to discuss it with the Visa & International Student Advice Team first. You can contact them at advice@kcl.ac.uk.
