About the building

Birches

interior-building-with-birch-trunksCreated by artist Tania Kovats, 'Birches' consists of 5 cast birch trees suspended vertically in the atrium, accompanied by the soundtrack of a blackbird’s daily call.

The trees are both architectural and a part of nature, drawing concepts of the natural world into the building.;

'Birch' symbolically points to the reality of being at the point of life where the small details of living come into sharp focus, where the call of a bird or the surface of tree bark is something small enough to be noticed or cherished.

The work was commissioned by King's College London for the Cicely Saunders Institute and was curated and managed by the Contemporary Arts Society.
