Cicely Saunders International Annual Lecture 2019
‘Got quality? The urgent need to focus on quality and not solely costs’
The U.S. health care system is undergoing a transition from a fee-for-service payment system, where health care reimbursement is based on procedures, physician visits or hospitalisations, to a payment model based on value.
Value is based on both the cost and quality of care. As the U.S. and other nations make this transition, it is crucial that we develop actionable quality measures which examine patient and family outcomes, not just care processes. In this lecture, the challenges of measuring the quality of care for seriously ill and dying persons will be discussed, using lessons learned from developed quality measures for public reporting in the USA.
Presented by Dr Joan Teno
Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, Adjunct Professor of Health Systems, Policy, and Practice, Brown School of Public Health.
