About the speaker
Dr Pedro L Gozalo (PhD), Health Economist at Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research, and Associate Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice (Research), Brown School of Public Health, USA.
More than thirty years after hospice became a Medicare benefit in 1983 in the USA, during which few significant policy changes took place, CMS has recently undertaken a systematic review of different aspects of hospice and palliative care, including the first payment reform in 2016, the provision in August 2017 of quality measures that allow individuals some level of comparison of hospice programs, and an initiative being currently tested to explore the concurrent use of palliative and curative care. This talk will cover these and other major policy changes recently implemented or under consideration, as well as future challenges faced by the expansion of palliative care in the USA.
