Award for Dr Diane Meier
The Cicely Saunders Institute wishes to congratulate Dr Diane Meier for her recently awarded medal of honour from the American Cancer Society in Washington DC on November 18th 2011. Dr Meier is Director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), a national organization devoted to increasing the number and quality of palliative care programs in the United States. She is also Director of the Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute; Professor of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine; and Catherine Gaisman Professor of Medical Ethics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
The award is the American Cancer Society’s highest honour. It is given annually for outstanding contributions to cancer control in four categories: clinical research, basic research, cancer control, and philanthropy. Dr. Meier has been chosen to receive the Cancer Control award.
Dr Meier collaborates on the International Access Rights and Empowerment (IARE) Research Project that forms part of project BuildCARE. BuildCARE is one of the Institute’s new cross-national projects. BuildCARE aims to instigate a sea change in the way palliative care is regarded, prioritised and implemented internationally. The IARE project brings together experts from the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Beaumont Hospital in Dublin Ireland, Mt Sinai Medical Centre in New York City USA, and King’s College Hospital in London in the UK (project lead).
