The cicely saunders institute annual lecture success

(L-R): Lord Bob Kerslake, Chair for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; Professor Irene J Higginson, Institute Director; Mr John McGrath, Cicely Saunders International Trustee; Dr Eduardo Bruera, lecture speaker; Professor Edward Byrne, President & Principal of King’s College London; and Dr Mary Baines, former colleague of Dame Cicely.

The Cicely Saunders Institute hosted its flagship event, the Annual Lecture, on Monday 6 July. This year's lecture was given by Dr Eduardo Bruera, Professor and FT McGraw Chair in the Treatment of Cancer, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr Bruera delivered an inspiring presentation on Clinical interventions to enhance the expectation of healing: continuing on the pathway of Dame Cicely. The lecture was particularly poignant as it was part of an event series supported by Cicely Saunders International, held to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the death of Dame Cicely and to celebrate the continuation of her life's work.

Introducing the key speaker, the Principal and President of King's College London, Professor Edward Byrne congratulated the Institute on its success in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The institute was pleased to welcome more than 100 guests, including relatives and former colleagues of Dame Cicely, as well as local and international leaders in palliative care, policy makers and funders. Remote audience also participated in the event via video-conference from nine different sites across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, the United States and Uganda.

Dr Bruera's presentation was filmed and will be available to view on our Youtube Channel shortly.
