Expertise

The Department of Classics prides itself on being one of the largest – and most dynamic – national and international centres for research into the ancient Mediterranean world.

Research specialisms cover all aspects of antiquity, with special reference to Greek and Roman cultures, as well as their influence and reception from Late Antiquity to the present day (including the whole field of Hellenic studies).

Our collective expertise includes:

  • Classical Greek and Latin language and literature (from Homeric epic to Neo-Latin literature);
  • Greek, Roman and Near Eastern ancient history; art and archaeology from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine period and beyond;
  • Greek and Roman thought from the Presocratics to the Neoplatonists;
  • Epigraphy and manuscript studies;
  • The history of the Classical tradition in textual scholarship, art, literature, film and popular culture.

Our teaching and research staff all have varied research specialisms. As a Department, however, King’s Classics is renowned for its interdisciplinary ways of working – not only within the field of classics, but also across the arts & humanities.
