Team-Based Learning

The Prevention of Medication Errors

All senior medical, nursing, pharmacy and midwifery students participate in this learning activity.

Aims

To develop understanding of differing roles and responsibilities in medicines management, thereby enabling more effective collaborative working in medication safety.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss individual and team responsibilities in the delivery of safe medicines management
  • Identify factors that have contributed to the medication error
  • Participate in a collaborative presentation of the error and preventative strategies to a ‘Risk Management Committee’
  • Reflect upon learning for future practice

This activity consists of two parts:

An E-learning package that consists of films depicting differing medication error scenarios, along with interactive resources associated with the error. Students are allocated to one of the scenarios and are required to engage with the resources prior to the workshop.

Interprofessional Workshop

Students are divided into mixed discipline groups according to the scenario which they have been allocated. Together they undertake a root cause analysis of the error and reflect on their learning from undertaking this exercise in an interprofessional team.
