Academics and artists explore the relationship between Arts, Health and Wellbeing
Innovation in Arts, Health and Wellbeing 2017/18
A new iteration of the successful arts, health and wellbeing Innovation programme launched in 2018. The project offers opportunities for artists and health academics at King's to work together and develop new conversations and collaborations.
One strand of the programme is aimed at engaging Dental Institute academics to work with artist partners to conceive and develop experimental arts-based approaches to the Dental Institute’s focus of Understanding Disease, Enhancing Health and Restoring Function. An initial workshop took place in January 2018, followed by a second workshop in March which offered opportunities for artists and arts organisations to develop new conversations and collaborations with Dental Institute researchers at King's.
A second strand is aimed at academics from Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, responding to the question: “Reimagining staff wellbeing and workforce sustainability in healthcare settings: Can we enhance resilience, engagement and performance through innovative arts interventions?”
Seed-funding was awarded to the best proof of concept ideas in each strand and a total of eight projects are now underway with one more in the pipeline:
Arts in Dentistry projects
- 360 patient care, led by Dr Bryan Kerr, Department of Sedation & Special Care Dentistry, with Too Right Films Ltd The project aims to create a 360 film to help the viewer see the world from the perspective of a disabled person to better understand the challenges facing disabled patients when accessing clinical environments.
- A dry and silent world: living with hidden disabilities, led by Professor Abigail Tucker, Centre for Craniofacial & Regenerative Biology, with Emma Barnard The project aims to raise awareness of the hidden nature of hearing loss and dry mouth amongst vulnerable patient groups through 3D printing of the effected organs and photography.
- Call and response, led by Professor Andrea Streit, Department of Craniofacial Development & Stem Cell Biology, with Tabatha Andrews The project will investigate the nature of identity, memory and communication in stem cells and people. It will explore these topics in relation to stem cell research and focus on its implications for memory and hearing loss.
- Communicative musicality and dentists' speech patterns, led by Dr Sasha Scambler, Department of Population & Patient Health, with Christina Lovey The project will explore the rhythmic patterns present in dentists’ communications as they talk about their patients through the notion of communicative musicality.
- Stem cell story, led by Dr Rupali Lav and Professor Abigail Tucker, Centre for Craniofacial & Regenerative Biology, with Hayden Cohen The project focuses on bringing a human element to Regenerative Dentistry/Stem Cell research through the use of spoken word/poetry and music that brings dental/oral stem cells into the public eye.
Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care projects
- Creative breaks: making time for creativity in the working day, led by Dr Sue Woodward, Department of Adult Nursing, with Angela Maddock The project involves holding a weekly hour-long arts-based lunchtime creativity break for nursing and midwifery students, staff and lecturers to promote the power of creative breaks for work productivity and enjoyment.
- Handover choreography: practice improvement through mobility analysis, led by Professor Anne Marie Rafferty, Department of Adult Nursing, with Vera the Diva Dance School The project targets the choreographic dimensions of clinical handover with the aim of eliciting reflections on the appropriateness and effectiveness of prevailing handover practice.
- Skyscape wellbeing, led by Annie Holme, Department of Adult Nursing, with Ali Winstanley The project aims to promote the mental well-being of participants by encouraging purposeful observation of the sky in urban areas, the creation of sky images and contribution to a community artistic activity.
- End-of-life conversations, led by Dr Anna Weil and Katherine Sleeman, Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation, with Diana Gradinaru The project aims to use interview data from junior doctors, patients and carers taken from a research project on the Second Conversation Model to create an animated film.
Innovation in Arts, Health and Wellbeing 2016/17
The Cultural Institute and Breathe Arts Health Research collaborated to explore how the arts can enhance health and wellbeing in clinical and care settings.
A series of networking events for academics and artists were held across King's health campuses between Feburary and July 2016.
Following these workshops, seed-funding was awarded to the best arts and health proof of concept ideas that subsequently emerged.
All 14 projects supported through the 2016/17 programme have now completed.
