From pub gigs to palaces, tattoo parlours to Tate Modern or street art to the Southbank Centre: share what you love and try something new. The King’s Cultural Experience Award is a ten week co-curricular course that allows you to explore and map your cultural London in a fun, sociable and supported way. 

In previous years, we have made activist t-shirts at the Fashion and Textile Museum, taken a walking tour of alternative culture in Peckham, played surrealist games in the British Museum, delved into the history of the Southbank Centre, and enjoyed our very own dance class at Ballet Rambert.  Our Guy’s-based programme places a little more focus on arts and health, and has included drawing from anatomical wax models, and hearing about dance as a health intervention.

The Programme

Through a programme of creative workshops, exclusive visits to local arts and cultural organisations, walks and ideas labs you can:

  • Learn about the variety of arts and cultural activities in London
  • Build confidence with new, unexpected experiences
  • Experiment with capturing and sharing your cultural experiences
  • Reflect on your own cultural identity and tastes

The King’s Cultural Experience Award is a co-curricular programme offering experiential and creative learning outside of your formal studies.  You don’t need any prior knowledge of arts and culture to apply, just your curiosity and a commitment to completing the programme which includes self-directed activities and a short reflective assignment.  Awards are conferred at the King’s Experience Award Ceremony.

Intended learning outcomes

To qualify for the Award you will be able to –

• Identify a range of cultural venues and opportunities in London that build on, extend and challenge your existing interests and tastes;
• Communicate your personal and imaginative responses to cultural activities through a range of mediums (e.g. reviews, freewriting, photo or video essay, etc.);
• Evaluate a cultural event or artefact with reference to the context in which it was produced and the interpretations and ideas of others;
• Synthesise ideas gained through your cultural experiences in order to produce a reflective account of your cultural London.

How to Apply

Applications open 16 November for the Spring Term module.

Applications will close 7 January however we expect the course will be filled before then so please apply as soon as possible.

Applications are provisionally accepted on a first-come first-served basis and are reliant on your attendance at the first session of the programme.


A cultural blog.

This should include posts on at least five cultural activities, showing a good balance of personal reflection and critical analysis. There is no restriction on mediums incorporated into the blog and students are encouraged to illustrate their posts with video, photography, digital narrative, creative writing, etc. (Guidelines: 300-500 words, 2-3 minute video clips, and/or 4-6 images per post.)

1000-word reflective essay.

The reflective essay should articulate what the student has learned about their cultural London through participation in the programme. This should include reflections on how their perception of cultural London has changed, what they have learned about their own definition of ‘arts and culture’, how their interests and tastes have been challenged and developed, and why culture matters to them and to society more generally. This can include illustrations and students will be encouraged to think creatively about structure, style and layout: e.g. ‘My cultural London in 10 objects’, or an essay based around an illustrated map or walking tour.Students will be invited to submit drafts for formative feedback on all assessed elements.

Why is the Guy's course Health-faculties only?

The guy's course is based at the Gordon Museum of Pathology. Due to the nature of the artifacts displayed at the museum, it is not open to the public and access is only usually given medical, dental and biomedical students and healthcare professionals. 

If you are not a Health Faculties student but think you have a strong reason to be considered for this course (eg. you are studying 'Medicine, Health and Public Policy' in SSPP, or you have a medical background but are studying a different course at King's) then please include this information on the application form. These will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you do not have a particular interest in this area then please apply for the general course at strand. If you are unable to make the dates this term, the strand course will alse be being repeated in the spring term.
