The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences Professional Services Staff are responsible for Faculty strategic and financial planning, governance, co-ordination of departmental professional services, academic services, quality assurance, support for the Executive Dean of Faculty & their Deputies, Faculty marketing and communications, and research and teaching support.

The faculty Office works with staff across the Faculty and University to support the work of the Faculty.

  • Ensuring appropriate governance mechanisms are in place across the faculty

Academic Centre / Education Support 

The Academic Centre is the hub for student activity in the Dental Institute.  Primarily based on Floor 18, Tower Wing, the team co-ordinate timetables, assessments, LIFT UPP, clinical teaching, room bookings, and a range of student related activities for undergraduate students and a number of programme related activities for postgraduate students.

BDS Assessment Team

The Assessment team are responsible for the administration of all aspects of assessment relating to the undergraduate dentistry programme.

  • Delivery of assessment to undergraduate BDS students (written/online/clinical)
  • Ensuring all assessment follows College procedure
  • Upkeep of (historical) assessment record
  • Administration of Overseas Registration Exam on behalf of the General Dental Council

BDS Curriculum Team

The Team  works with staff across the Faculty, the NHS and College to support the work of the Undergraduate BDS Course and provides support for the student experience in the Dental Institute, including:

  • Organisation and development of timetables and  rotations
  • Distribution of course material
  • Monitoring student progress
  • Processing of applications and examinations for prizes
  • Administrative support for the curriculum, Student-Staff Liaison and progress sub-committees
  • Responding to student and staff queries regarding the BDS course

Distance Learning

The Distance Learning Administration Team is responsible for supporting both the work of students and teaching staff involved in distance learning postgraduate MSc and MClinDent programmes. 

Based at the Guy’s campus, The Distance Learning Administration Team provides comprehensive administrative support to all the distance learning programmes.

 Running as a cohesive unit and headed up by the Senior Administrator, each team member leads proactively on specific functions to ensure a synergistic operation across the planning, delivery and quality assurance of all the distance learning postgraduate MSc and MClinDent programmes.

Development Team

The Development team seeks to co ordinate the Dental Institute’s development activity and to project manage its implementation.

The team works with staff across the Institute and with iTEL to support business development and to coordinate enhancements to existing programmes and to project support new PGT activities.

iTEL - Informatics and technology enhanced learning hub

 iTEL Hub provides expertise and support in pedagogy, curriculum design and learning design for staff members wishing to embed technologies for teaching, learning, and assessment in their courses. They offer support in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Virtual Learning Environment (currently KEATS and Virtual Campus), learning and teaching materials, tools and technologies associated with its usage.

LonDEC

The LonDEC team are responsible for the smooth running of the Dental Institutes post qualification education and training facility for dental professionals.

LonDEC offers CPD programmes to dental professionals within the UK and abroad. It is also the residential course home for the The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences students that are studying towards a post graduate award via the blended learning route. LonDEC also works collaboratively with Health Education England (NE, NW & S London) to provide education and training for dental professional within the M25

 

Core function of the team:

  • Designing and running short course CPD programmes
  • Hosting dental industry colleagues that are running seminar and hands-on education and training courses.
  • Work with HEE colleagues to put on a bespoke education and training programme.
  • Running LonDEC courses and conferences

Faculty Communications

The faculty communications team seek to communicate the activities of the faculty and its departments in an effective and co-ordinated manner.

  • Manage internal communication with staff and students in the faculty including monitoring the global email lists, running the Faculty's news and events bulletins and the Faculty's intranet
  • Co-ordinating cross-College communications including the faculty's contribution to Staff News
  • Writing news stories on behalf of the faculty and co-ordinating promotion with the PR team and on the department and Faculty websites
  • Managing the faculty website and overseeing the departmental websites to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Managing the faculty’s social media channels

Faculty Marketing

The Marketing team are responsible for developing and implementing the marketing plan for recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students to the Faculty.

  • Promoting to prospective students
  • Providing marketing advice for new programmes
  • Co-ordinating the Faculty’s involvement in marketing initiatives: UK schools liaison, conversion campaigns, subject webinars, open days and recruitment events
  • They also represent the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences on recruitment trips
  • Updating the prospectus

Oral Clinical Research Unit

The King's College London The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences Oral Clinical Research Unit (OCRU) supports the delivery of quality clinical research, which is high-impact  and in line with current regulations and legislation. The OCRU can be used as a central reference point to both researchers and external collaborators for help in setting up clinical research projects. It supports studies in its state-of-the-art clinical and laboratory services, which together, provide world leading clinical studies that are supported from concept to the promotion of best clinical practice.

Research Support Team

 The Research Support team provide support to staff and students on research management and governance, research funding, and publication and dissemination of research. The team also organise research related events and meetings

  • Ensure grants applications across the Faculty are fully costed and submitted on time, and that grant outputs are delivered to time and budget. 
  • Support the research students & staff with administrative tasks
  • Ensure the research staff comply with college Research policies including publications and Open Access
  • Support the all research staff with purchasing and expense claims

BDS Education Division Administration

TheBDS Education Division Team are responsible for providing administrative support for clinical teachers and their involvement with undergraduate/postgraduate teaching.   They also work closely with the Academic Centre with regards to student information and the recording of student progress.

Technical Support Staff

The The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences employs around 25 research technicians within the technical services team supported on both HEFCE funding and individual grant funding.

 The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences operates on all the University’s main campuses and also includes outreach teaching facilities in West Norwood, and at Portsmouth (in association with the University of Portsmouth).  The main research laboratories are based on two Floors of Guy’s Tower, and another facility within the Hodgkin Building also on the Guy’s campus.  Overall space comprises Office (1288 m2), Highly serviced labs (1288 m2) & other (2186 m2) teaching, spin out company & Londec space.

 A wide range of complex equipment and techniques are used in the course of the research in the Dental Institute such as: Confocal, Micro CT and  other Microscopical techniques, Ultrastructural Imaging, Histology & Immunohistochemistry, Tissue Culture, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Radiation, Genetic Modification, Molecular Biology and the Biological Services Unit.
