Oral Surgery and Maxillofacial

The Oral Surgery and Maxillofacial Group has established a national and international reputation in the prevention, management and education in trigeminal nerve post-traumatic neuropathy related to dental surgery (trigeminalnerve.org.uk). The group has developed a research programme in acute and chronic orofacial pain. Using various technologies including lab-based immuno histochemistry, calcium channel imaging and patient experimentation-psychometrics, MRI, arterial spin labelling, genetic profiling and PET Glial cell labelling, we are exploring the mechanisms and potential biomarkers in many domains of chronic orofacial pain (Post-surgical acute pain, dentine sensitivity, burning mouth syndrome, cluster headaches, post-traumatic neuropathy and trigeminal neuralgia).
