Miletich Lab

Principal Investigator: Dr Isabelle Miletich

The Miletich Laboratory studies the biology of salivary gland stem cells in order to provide new treatment options for patients affected with dry mouth caused by irreversible salivary gland dysfunction. Dry mouth leads to a dramatic loss in quality of life as it affects everyday physiological functions including mastication, taste and speech and is associated with a sharp increase in dental caries and oral infections. Permanent salivary gland dysfunction is a common feature of head and neck cancer survivors, who have undergone radiation therapy, Sjögren patients affected by autoimmunity and the elderly. The group focuses on the characterisation of salivary gland stem/progenitor cells and signalling pathways involved in the activation of these cells following salivary gland injury.
