Principal Investigator: Professor William Wade

William Wade has been one of the pioneers in developing methods for the characterisation of the oral microbiome in health and disease. He is a curator of the Human Oral Microbiome Database ( in collaboration with colleagues from the Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, USA. Current research uses next generation sequencing methods to investigate the role of bacteria in oral diseases, the vaginal microbiome and pre-term birth and the gut microbiome in preterm neonates and in children with Crohn's disease. Cultivation of previously uncultured oral bacteria is a major goal. In-vitro biofilm models are used in the development of novel prevention and treatment methods for oral disease, including probiotics.
