Principal Investigator: Professor William Wade

William Wade has been one of the pioneers in developing methods for the characterisation of the oral microbiome in health and disease. He is a curator of the Human Oral Microbiome Database (www.homd.org) in collaboration with colleagues from the Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, USA. Current research uses next generation sequencing methods to investigate the role of bacteria in oral diseases, the vaginal microbiome and pre-term birth and the gut microbiome in preterm neonates and in children with Crohn's disease. Cultivation of previously uncultured oral bacteria is a major goal. In-vitro biofilm models are used in the development of novel prevention and treatment methods for oral disease, including probiotics.
