PhD Research

The English Department here at King’s, one of the largest and oldest English departments in the UK, was ranked 8th in the UK for the quality and quantity of its research in the most recent Research Excellence Framework.

Our PhDs cover topics ranging from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day and you’ll have the opportunity to work on a distinctive research project of your own.
Our research is organised around six thematic clusters with experts in each subject area so you’ll find something to suit your interests:
  • Text, history, politics
  • Literature, medicine and science
  • Material, visual and digital cultures
  • Gender and sexuality
  • Life writing, performance and creative writing
  • Colonial, postcolonial and transnational culture
Our research students also have the option to take up Graduate Teaching Assistant roles as part of their PhD.
