Professor Declan O’Regan
Title talk: AI for diagnosis, prognosis and drug discovery in heart disease
Abstract:
Machine learning algorithms are allowing new insights into health and disease through analysing images of the heart. Combining these models with genetic data is enabling a new era of discovery science and precision medicine. In this talk we will look at how technology is offering insights on how the heart develops, how aging affects the heart and circulation, and how we can make better predictions about future health and therapies.
Biography:
Prof Declan O'Regan is British Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiovascular AI and a Consultant Radiologist. He leads the Computational Cardiac Imaging Group at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences. He has recently served on MRC and BHF award committees, and currently chairs the SCMR Publications Committee. His role in supporting early career researchers has been recognised by the Roentgen and Rohan-Williams travelling professorships, and he is a Braunwald Visiting Scholar at Harvard University. His research is focussed on using machine learning to discover mechanisms that underpin cardiovascular disease by integrating data from human imaging, genetics and environmental risk factors. He collaborates with industry to accelerate progress in drug discovery using automated genotype-phenotype modelling. His work is funded by the Medical Research Council, British Heart Foundation, Heart Research UK, National Institutes of Health, Calico Labs and Bayer.
