Summary:

Inspired by the important recent discussions around #MeToo and the Repeal the 8th Pro-Choice movement in Ireland, the Gender Studies Network at King’s and the London Arts and Humanities Partnership are hosting a night of spoken word, poetry and performance exploring the personal as political.

Marking both International Women’s Day, and the centenary of women’s suffrage in the UK this event explores the importance of bringing gendered experiences into the public and political space.

Three Irish performers, Eva O’Connor, Doireann O’Bryne, and Sinead O’Brien, curated by Sara Joyce, director with the Old Vic 12, perform their interpretation of a core feminist theme – the personal is political. This event is a way to mark the 100-year anniversary of women’s most formal entry into the political domain and to take stock of how we understand issues around the body, choice and women’s public voice in today’s world.

Biographies:

Eva O’Connor is a writer and performer from Co. Clare, Ireland. She has written for the stage, for television and for radio. Her play Overshadowed was recently adapted as a BBC3 drama. Awards for her work include Fishamble award for Best New Writing (Dublin Fringe 2015), Argus Angel Award (Brighton Fringe 2015) Best Theatre Award (Adelaide Fringe 2017).

Doireann May White trained at RADA. Work for stage includes Crestfall (RADA Festival/Gielgud Theatre); Christmas at Mildreds (Dollygrip Productions/Hen and Chickens Theatre)The Sweethearts (Raisedark/Finborough Theatre); and There is No Failure Only Feedback (Rosemary Branch Theatre); and The Sugar Wife, Women of Twilight, New Labour and The Rover whilst at RADA. Work for camera includes the RTE Storyland series Student Teacher, and short films Maeve, Impact, Those Who are Lost and Nothing Surrounded by Us. She has just finished filming a role in the webseries Stalling.

Sinead O’Brien is an Irish poet and spoken word artist. Sinead has recently performed with Yuki (BONINGEN), Dan Lyons (Fat White Family) and Niall Burns (WHENYOUNG). Her poetry collection is titled I AM A GANG OF WOMEN.
