The Behavioural Public Policy Lab in the School for Government at King’s College London and the Department of Economics at Warwick University are delighted to announce the inaugural Behavioural Environmental Economics and Policy (BEEP) workshop, co-sponsored by the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management (JEEM), on 10-11 September 2026. About BEEP 

BEEP is an emerging subfield of economics which applies behavioural insights from the social and behavioural sciences—including, but not limited to, behavioural economics, psychology, and sociology—to environmental decision-making and policy. The 2026 BEEP workshop is part of a broader initiative led by Dr. Sanchayan Banerjee (KCL) and Dr. Lory Barile (Warwick University) to systematically organise and structure scholars and practitioners working on behavioural and environmental economics as well as policy. Consequently, the workshop also builds on many ongoing efforts by Banerjee and Barile such as their forthcoming book with Routledge (forthcoming in 2027) as well as two special collections on BEEP in Environmental and Resource Economics and Frontiers in Behavioural Economics (joint with Frontiers in Environmental Economics) journals. It is expected that the current workshop will evolve into an annual BEEP conference starting 2027 which will be organised at King’s College London rotating with Warwick University thereon.

Topics of the workshop

We welcome conceptual/theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented submissions that apply behavioural insights to understand, explain, or solve environmental problems. Illustrative themes include choice architecture and environmental outcomes; interactions between behavioural instruments and prices/regulation; welfare measurement and persistence (including psychological costs); distributional and equity dimensions; climate cognition and communication; evaluation and methods.

We particularly encourage quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method designs (e.g., field/lab experiments, quasi-/natural experiments, RCTs, process evaluations), though literature reviews and theoretical contributions will also be considered. Overall, we seek contributions that diagnose and integrate market and behavioural failures and that design, test, and evaluate policies, including “green nudges”, that are both effective and welfare-enhancing.

Illustrative topics (not exhaustive):

• Interactions between market failures and behavioural failures in environmental settings.
• Policy design that combines prices/standards with behavioural tools (defaults, salience/framing, simplification, commitment).
• Welfare analysis (including psychological costs), ethics, and paternalism in environmental policy.
• Empirical identification of behavioural mechanisms; field/lab/quasi-experimental evidence.
• Heterogeneity, equity, and distributional consequences of behavioural environmental policies.
• Replication, meta-analysis, and open-science practices in this domain.
