Eliano dos Santos

Dr. Eliano dos Santos

Title:

Systemic extracellular acidification is a hallmark of ageing

Scope of the talk:

This talk will explore how ageing leads to progressive systemic acidification across species, which strongly correlates with increased mortality rate and reduced resilience to acidotic stress. In Drosophila and mouse models, susceptibility to acidity is primarily driven by downregulation of genes that control pH homeostasis and energy production in the excretory tract.

Biography:

Dr. Eliano dos Santos is a medically trained ageing researcher using pre-clinical models to investigate how acid-base balance and glycolytic metabolism impact the rate of ageing and predisposition to age-related diseases. Eliano completed his medical training at the NOVA Medical School in Lisbon. He joined Dr. Helena Cocheme’s lab at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences / Imperial College London for his PhD studies on the role of acid-base balance in ageing and age-related disease. Eliano is currently a Research Associate at King’s College London, working with Dr. Anna Zoccarato and Prof. Ajay Shah to elucidate the mechanistic role of glycolytic metabolism in heart failure progression.

Title:

Nutritional, Functional and Psychological Considerations for Obesity Management Medications in Adults – An EASO, EFAD and ECPO Consensus Statement.

Outline:

This presentation will focus on the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), European Federation of the Association of Dietitian's (EFAD) and European Coalition for People with Obesity (ECPO) Consensus Statement, detailing the nutritional, functional, and psychological support strategies which are required to optimise patient safety and outcomes during treatment with obesity management medications.

Biography:

Dr Laurence Dobbie is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in General Practice at King’s College London, GP Registrar at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and clinical fellow in obesity medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He trained at the University of Glasgow and completed the Academic Foundation Programme at the University of Liverpool. Prior to his current post, he was a Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Obesity Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, working across Tier 3 and Tier 4 weight management services and as Sub-Principal Investigator on major obesity pharmacotherapy trials. His research programme focuses on equitable delivery of evidence-based obesity care, using population health and epidemiological methods to understand ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in management. He has led European consensus work on safe practice in bariatric and metabolic surgery medical tourism and contributed to evidence-based guidance for GLP-1 receptor agonist management in primary care. His additional research interests include obesity pharmacotherapy, metabolic liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD), and PCOS.
