The Christus Medicus (Christ the Physician) group is for Catholic university students of the healthcare professions and biosciences.

The main aims of the group are:

1) To enable members to support one another in faith, especially through prayer and fellowship

2) To help members to grow in love with Jesus Christ and in knowledge of the teachings of His Church and the lives of the saints

3) To encourage members to become professionals who imitate Christ as the Divine Physician, and who actively assist Him in His ongoing mission of healing and giving life and hope to the world of today.

In the second semester (February-April 26) the group will receive a lecture series titled ‘An Introduction to Catholic Bioethics.’ This series will focus on the Catholic Church’s teaching and response to difficult ethical questions. Six talks will be delivered by an exciting range of special guest academics and professionals.

The first lecture titled ‘An Introduction to Catholic Moral Thinking and Catholic Anthropology’ will be given by Dr Mike Delany on Wednesday 25th February at 6pm. Mike Delany originally trained as a nurse at King's College Hospital. He then studied medicine at UCLH and worked as a junior doctor for several years in anaesthetics and paediatrics. For over 25 years he served as a GP at a busy and large practice in Stevenage.

In the second talk, guest speaker Professor David Albert Jones will explore the topic of ‘Personhood and the Human Embryo.’ David Albert Jones is Professor of Bioethics at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. He is a Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford University, and Corresponding Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, and former Director of the Anscombe Bioethics Centre, Oxford.
