Dean's Office Book Club - Online - 1 December 2023

Please note that this event has passed.

Join us as we come together to discuss this term’s book 1984 by George Orwell (book is provided). A classic novel that complements this term’s AKC lecture series on freedom of expression.

‘The story takes place in an imagined future when much of the world is in conflict. Great Britain, now known as Airstrip One, has become a province of the totalitarian superstate Oceania, which is led by Big Brother, a dictatorial leader assisted by the Party's Thought Police. Through the Ministry of Truth, the Party engages in omnipresent government surveillance and constant propaganda to ensure that no individual thinking is allowed. Winston Smith works at The Ministry of Truth, carefully rewriting history, but he dreams of freedom and of rebellion.’

If you’ve read it before – maybe it’s time to read it again as we try to understand today’s world...
