Major changes are occurring in China’s relationship with its historic rival, Japan. Shrill criticism has given way to a much more friendly tone and this presentation will analyse how the media in both countries is covering developments. Japan is close to formally offering support for China’s Belt and Road initiative and will welcome President Xi Jinping to Tokyo in 2019. The talk will include research on how the recently created state-media outlet Voice of China handles Asian issues. We will also hear how Japan’s news editors approach their coverage of China and consider how this affects public opinion on contentious issues.
