This month's Nuclear Security Culture Programme (NSCP) webinar welcomes Dr Irman Abdul Rahman, who shares his expertise on the challenges and opportunities of establishing nuclear security programmes in academia.

In this session, Dr Rahman will discuss the approach taken by the National University of Malaysia in developing its Masters degree in Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards.

In addition to discussing the challenges and opportunities in developing such a Master's programme, especially from the context of a developing country such as Malaysia, Dr Rahman will elaborate on how the IAEA Nuclear Security Series No. 12-T (Rev. 1) alleviates some of these challenges.

The session will also provide an update on the recent developments in the wider regional context, which has the potential of increasing the enrolment interest, widening the candidate pool and increasing the sustainability of such a programmes over a longer period.


Biography

Dr Irman Abdul Rahman completed his Bachelor of Science in the field of Nuclear Science at the National University of Malaysia in 2001 and his PhD in the field of Physics at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom in 2008. He is currently an Associate Professor and Head of the Nuclear Center of Excellence (COE) at the Faculty of Science and Technology, National University of Malaysia, with 19 years’ experience in tertiary education and collaborative research.

During his tenure as an academic, he has been involved in developing and setting up education programs at the National University of Malaysia, which include the MSc in Radiation and Nuclear Safety and the new MSc in Nuclear Security, Safety and Safeguards. He has also been involved in the development of the Masters in Nuclear Safety and Security at the IAEA.

His research interest is in the field of Radiation Biophysics, and Radiation & Materials, but has recently endeavoured into Nuclear Security, carrying out research on Nuclear Security Culture Self-Assessment in Malaysia, with collaboration of the CSSS, Kings College London.

Dr Abdul Rahman also works closely with the Atomic Energy Licensing Board of Malaysia (AELB) and is a founding and current committee member of Malaysia’s Nuclear Security Support Centre (NSSC) and Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plan (INSSP) network.

He is involved in assisting the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in international missions, training courses, and developing guidance documents, and is the Point of Contact (POC) for the National University of Malaysia in the International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN) at the IAEA, where he is a former Chair of INSEN’s Working Group 1.
