Strand Campus, London
"The first thing I do is to start copying out." by Jean-Marie Straub
This workshop will look in detail at short films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet which use prose (Heinrich Böll, Marguerite Duras, Franz Kafka) and poetry (Stephane Mallarmé) as their source material. Martin Brady, Helen Hughes, Roland-François Lack and Nikolaj Lübecker will introduce and discuss the films to explore why literary texts, in the words of Danièle Huillet, “are still necessary to start the fire”. Erica Carter will chair the discussion amongst the speakers and with the audience.
The event is part of the Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet Retrospective (Enthusiasm) March-May 2019 at the BFI, ICA, Goethe-Institut, Institut Français and across London.
This workshop is being held in collaboration with the German Screen Studies Network (GSSN).
Tickets cost £5 / £3 (concessions). To book your tickets, please visit the KCL eStore.
