Co-written by Shoshana Zuboff (author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism), and directed by Marc Silver, Molly vs The Machines tells the devastating story of Molly Russell, who died after being exposed to self-harm content on social media. It explores how platform algorithms and the economic logic of Big Tech shaped the online environment around her.
The film is powerful and deeply relevant to the urgent conversations many of us are having about platform accountability and digital harms.
Dr Rachael Kent introduces the screening with some research context, and it will be followed by a pre-recorded discussion with Marc Silver, Ian Russell (Molly’s father), and Molly’s friends, hosted by Carole Cadwalladr.
Disclaimer: the film contains suicide theme, self-harm references, distressing scenes.
