From Idea to Impact: Launching Your LegalTech Startup

A workshop designed to immerse participants in the role of a legaltech entrepreneur, guiding them through the process of developing a legal technology startup leveraging exponential technologies such as blockchain, decentralised justice, and artificial intelligence.

Participants will navigate a streamlined version of product strategy development, prototype design, investment deck preparation, and project pitching.

The primary objective is to provide legal professionals with hands-on experience in innovation-driven legal ventures and equip them with practical skills to create and scale legaltech startups.

Participants are required to bring their laptop.

Programme

9am – Welcome Coffee

9.30am – Introduction to Legaltech & Exponential Technologies

The instructor introduces key technologies such as blockchain, decentralised justice, and AI and their impact on the legal industry.

10.30am – Coffee Break

10.45am – Team Formation & Idea Generation

Participants form teams of 2-3 members and brainstorm potential legaltech startup ideas.

11.00am – Business Model Development & Customer Discovery

Guided exercise to create a simplified business model canvas and identify customer pain points.

11.45am – Prototyping

Teams work on designing a basic no-code prototype of their product.

12.30pm – Lunch Break

1.30pm – Marketing & Communication Strategy

Instructor guides teams on how to position and market their legaltech products effectively.

2.15pm – Startup Fundraising Essentials

Overview of funding strategies, investor expectations, and pitch deck fundamentals.

2.45pm – Pitch Deck Preparation

Participants finalise their investment decks and rehearse their startup pitches.

3.45pm – Afternoon Coffee Break

4pm – Pitch Rehearsal

5pm – Demo Day

Teams present their projects to the group in a pitch session, receiving feedback from peers and the instructor.

Instructors

Federico Ast is a thought leader in legaltech and decentralised justice. He holds degrees in economics and philosophy from the University of Buenos Aires and earned a PhD in Business Administration from IAE Business School. He completed the Global Solutions Program at Singularity University in 2016. Federico is the founder of Kleros, a blockchain-based dispute resolution platform pioneering decentralised justice. He has taught and given lectures at Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Oxford, and HEC, as well as international organisations like the United Nations. He is also a Coursera instructor for courses such as Blockchain Disruption, The Lawyer of the Future, How to Invest in Crypto, and Entrepreneurship in Web3, attracting nearly 100,000 students worldwide.

Sophie Nappert is an independent arbitrator based in London, dual-qualified as an Avocat of the Bar of Quebec, Canada, and as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. Before becoming a full-time arbitrator in 2007, she was Head of International Arbitration at a global law firm. She is recognised for her expertise in complex energy, investment, and natural resources disputes. In 2021, she co-founded ArbTech, a global online community fostering dialogue on technology, dispute resolution, and the future of justice. Sophie holds degrees in both common law and civil law from McGill University and a Master’s in Law from King’s College London.
