This is an online event. If you're interested in joining this seminar, please contact netzero@kcl.ac.uk for the Teams meeting link.

This month we are joined by Professor Magda Titirici from Imperial College London.

In this seminar Professor Magda Titirici will present advances in hard carbon–NVP sodium-ion batteries, tracing the field from fundamental sodium storage mechanisms to integrated full-cell devices. The talk will discuss how structure–property relationships in disordered carbons—spanning defect adsorption, interlayer insertion, and pore filling—govern anode performance, alongside strategies to enhance conductivity and rate capability in NVP-based cathodes. By connecting sustainable carbon synthesis, advanced characterisation, and electrochemical engineering, the seminar will highlight pathways toward scalable, low-cost sodium-ion energy storage technologies for real-world applications.

Speaker bio: Professor Magda Titirici has a PhD from the University of Dortmund and a Habilitation from the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces/University of Potsdam. She moved to the UK in 2013 to take up a Reader position at Queen Mary, University of London to be promoted to full professor one year later. Magda moved to Imperial in 2019 as Chair in Sustainable Energy Materials. She also holds short visiting research positions in Japan, Sweden and Romania. Magda’s research is on sustainable materials and their implementation in batteries beyond Li ion as well as in electrocatalytic processes. Her research was awarded by Royal Society of Chemistry, Royal Society, Institute of Materials and Mines and the Chinese Academy of Science.

Net Zero Interdisciplinary Seminar Series

The Net Zero Interdisciplinary Seminar Series is the flagship seminar series for King’s College London’s Net Zero Centre, providing a platform for cross-pollination between academia, industry and government to develop novel research projects to achieve Net Zero.

Every month, we host a speaker to discuss a new research idea and seek contributions from audience members on a proposed challenge. A half-hour talk is followed by a discussion, and we encourage speakers to engage with colleagues on research related to our four priority areas, decarbonisation, sustainable manufacturing, equitable resource allocation and resilient infrastructure.

About us

The Net Zero Centre at King's is dedicated to addressing the challenges of decarbonising our society and reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing, infrastructure, and cities. It serves as hub for scientific, technological and engineering research geared towards this challenge.

Based in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences (NMES), the Centre works across the boundaries of disciplines at King’s from geography and business to law and social science to deliver solutions for sustainable development. The Centre fosters the next generation of King’s change-makers by educating scientists and engineers on the holistic context of these challenges and developing technologically aware social scientists, lawyers, and policy makers.
