In her lecture, Law, Leadership and Legacy, Dr. I. Stephanie Boyce CBE will reflect on her personal journey from a low income, first generation British household on a council estate to becoming a nationally recognised leader in law, governance and public service.

Drawing on the transformative power of education, social mobility and representation, she examines the structural inequalities that persist in the legal profession and society, and the work she has led to widen access to justice, strengthen inclusive leadership, and build a profession that better reflects the communities it serves. She highlights the deeply concerning erosion of the rule of law, from chronic underinvestment in the justice system to proposals to remove jury trials and warns that democracy and constitutional rights can weaken not in dramatic moments, but through steady neglect.

Speaker bio:

Dr I. Stephanie Boyce CBE is widely regarded as a trailblazer in the UK legal profession, earning respect for her leadership, resilience, and commitment to social mobility, equity, diversity and inclusion and access to justice.

In March 2021, she made history as the 177th President of the Law Society of England and Wales, becoming the first person of colour and the sixth woman to hold the position. Her presidency coincided with significant events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit, and the war in Ukraine. She is credited with providing steady leadership during these turbulent times.
