Meme-tivism: Rethinking the Environmental Footprint of AI & ML
Bush House, Strand Campus, London
Are you an AI / ML practitioner, researcher or student? Would you like to join a 2-hour, fun, hands-on, in-person workshop where we’ll explore how memes - yes, memes! - can help us re-think the environmental impact and sustainability of AI & ML?
Memes have become a widespread form of online expression, shaping the way we engage with and understand contemporary issues. With their humorous, relatable and viral nature, they’ve become powerful tools to express complex ideas and engage wide audiences. Drawing inspiration from how the climate justice movement uses memes to raise awareness and spark dialogue, this workshop invites you to explore meme-making as a form of expression.
This workshop will support AI practitioners to rethink:
- The environmental footprint of AI and data systems
- The challenges developers face in making sustainable choices
- The difficulty of navigating immateriality of energy and carbon metrics
- Feelings of powerlessness or uncertainty in the face of big systems
- Coping with feelings of climate-anxiety and climate-guilt
