Clinical research and toxicology laboratories are under increasing pressure to deliver deeper analytical insight, faster turnaround times and greater confidence across increasingly complex sample matrices. Next generation mass spectrometry is transforming this landscape by combining high sensitivity, robust quantitative performance and expanding capabilities for targeted and untargeted analysis. From small molecule drugs and metabolites to steroids, peptides, biomarkers and emerging toxicological threats, modern LC-MS/MS and high-resolution accurate mass platforms enable researchers to detect, quantify and characterize analytes with exceptional selectivity.

This talk will explore how advances in mass spectrometry workflows, automation, software and data interpretation are supporting clinical research and forensic toxicology applications. It will also consider the growing role of orthogonal technologies, including ambient source technology and innovative sample preparation and chromatographic solutions. By integrating multiple technologies, laboratories can improve confidence in identification, streamline method development and support translational research from discovery through routine implementation.

The session will highlight practical considerations for deploying next generation analytical platforms, including workflow robustness, scalability, regulatory expectations and the need for harmonized, reproducible data. Attendees will gain perspective on how integrated analytical strategies can help advance clinical research, toxicology testing and future laboratory innovation.

Dr Edward Goucher - Senior Business Development Manager, Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Edward is a Senior Business Development Manager within the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division at Thermo Fisher Scientific, supporting the Clinical Research Vertical. He holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Toxicology from King’s College London, where his research was supported by the WADA-accredited London Drug Control Centre and the Pharmaceutical Science Research Division. Edward has held a range of industry-focused roles and now leads Business Development activities across the life sciences mass spectrometry sector. His areas of focus include clinical and translational research, forensic and sports anti-doping abd wellness, connecting scientific expertise with strategic market development.
