This is an online event. If you're interested in joining this seminar, please contact netzero@kcl.ac.uk for the Teams meeting link.

This month we are joined by Dr Conchi Ania from Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Orleans, France.

Plastic pollution and waste management is a major global environmental and socio-economical issue recognised by the goals of the Agenda 2030 and the commitment to achieve net zero waste plastic industry by 2050. Global research actions on the topic are centred in 2 global axes that are the decarbonisation of the plastic industry – highly consumed plastics are produced from fossil-based polymers – and their reusability/recyclability – plastic resilience in the environment triggers accumulation and pollution of natural environments including water bodies.

In this seminar Dr Ania will present some of the research direction towards the circularity of plastic wastes carried out in their team, providing a comprehensive view on key advancements required to strengthen recycling and up-/-down-cycling strategies for plastic wastes.

Speaker bio: Dr. Conchi Ania is a Research Director of Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Orléans, France. She also holds a position as Investigador Cientifico of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC, Spain). Since 2023, she is Project Director at Petru Poni Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry in Iasi (Romania).

She has a long-standing interest on nanoporous materials with tailored surface chemistry and architectures as structural and functional solids for applications covering energy storage/conversion and environmental remediation. Current research interests focus on implementing porous materials and approaches (photocatalysis, electrocatalysis) in environmental remediation, water treatment, gas adsorption/separation, and solar energy conversion (solar fuels, photovoltaics).

She is Editor of Carbon journal since 2020.

  • 2023 she has received the Silver Medal of CNRS.
  • 2016 she received a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council program.
  • 2008 she received The National L’Oreal-Unesco 2008 Research Fellowship “For women in Science”, and the Excellence Research Award by University of Granada in Spain.

Net Zero Interdisciplinary Seminar Series

The Net Zero Interdisciplinary Seminar Series is the flagship seminar series for King’s College London’s Net Zero Centre, providing a platform for cross-pollination between academia, industry and government to develop novel research projects to achieve Net Zero.

Every month, we host a speaker to discuss a new research idea and seek contributions from audience members on a proposed challenge. A half-hour talk is followed by a discussion, and we encourage speakers to engage with colleagues on research related to our four priority areas, decarbonisation, sustainable manufacturing, equitable resource allocation and resilient infrastructure.

About us

The Net Zero Centre at King's is dedicated to addressing the challenges of decarbonising our society and reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing, infrastructure, and cities. It serves as hub for scientific, technological and engineering research geared towards this challenge.

Based in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences (NMES), the Centre works across the boundaries of disciplines at King’s from geography and business to law and social science to deliver solutions for sustainable development. The Centre fosters the next generation of King’s change-makers by educating scientists and engineers on the holistic context of these challenges and developing technologically aware social scientists, lawyers, and policy makers.
