Overview of the webinar
The province of New Brunswick in Canada is facing a critical shortage of social workers, reflecting a broader international crisis in social work recruitment and retention. While much research focuses on why social workers leave the profession, no studies to date in the province, or across Canada have drawn on the insights of experienced practitioners to identify factors that sustain them in the profession over the longer term and their views on the need for organizational change. Through semi structured interviews and Cook et al’s (2022) novel timeline methodology this qualitative study asked social workers who remained in practice for more than 20 years the following question, “what can we learn from those who stay?” The findings have important implications for recruitment and retention strategies in social work organizations, and potentially other human services in New Brunswick, Canada and internationally.
