"Extracellular matrix defects destabilise apical cytoarchitecture during early Down syndrome neurodevelopment"

Speaker: Dr Teresa Pereira da Silva (UCL)

Biography: Teresa is a postdoctoral researcher at UCL GOS Institute of Child Health. Her current research applies human stem cell-derived neural models to investigate mechanisms of cerebellar development and disease. She is investigating the mechanisms underlying cerebellar hypoplasia in trisomy 21 (TS21). Using iPSC-derived cerebellar organoids, 2D neuroepithelial models and developing human cerebellar tissue, she has shown that TS21 disrupts extracellular matrix (ECM) organisation, leading to altered tissue mechanics, impaired endosomal trafficking, destabilisation of apical progenitor architecture and changes in progenitor composition.
