Abstract

Many people with advanced dementia live and die in nursing homes where quality of life, care and dying is variable. Namaste Care is a multi-sensory intervention for people with advanced dementia, however there is limited evidence of its efficacy. The results are presented of a feasibility study undertaken to establish if it is acceptable and feasible to: 1. Deliver the Namaste Care intervention in nursing homes in the context of a trial, and 2. Identify clinically meaningful outcome measures to support a definitive trial. The challenges of evaluating person centred interventions within a trial context will be considered.

Speaker

Katherine Froggatt works at the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University as a Professor of Ageing and Palliative Care. Her research foci are the care of older people and palliative care, focused particularly in care homes and for people with dementia. Recent studies include a European study (PACE)that involved a complex palliative care intervention trial for care homes, and a feasibility trial of the Namaste Care intervention for people with advanced dementia in nursing homes.
