Governance

The Department of German is governed through a number of committees, in which both staff members and student representatives play a role.

The most important committee from a student perspective is the Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC).  The SSLC consists of a selection of staff members and student representatives from each undergraduate year group, as well as postgraduate representatives.  Representatives from the SSLC also attend staff meetings and feed student views into the departmental decision-making process.

The Department Education Committee advises the Head of Department on teaching strategy and practice within the department while the Research Committee advises the Head of Department on all matters relating to research. The Research Students Committee covers all matters relating to research study including the monitoring of postgraduate research students.

Members of staff also carry out a number of administrative support roles within the department. If you have a specific enquiry but are unsure who to contact, contact us and we will put you in touch with the right person.

Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC)

The Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) provides an important means of communication between staff and students in the Department of German.  It is an open and friendly forum for the interests and views of Department students to be represented directly to staff.  Student comments and suggestions are considered very seriously, and the issues raised in the meetings are followed through following discussions at staff meetings (which are also attended by student representatives). After each meeting, the Department produces minutes of the meeting in the form of a "You Said - We Replied" document, responding to all points raised.

Meetings are held approximately three times per year.  If you have any suggestions to make regarding the Department - teaching, facilities, student support etc.- which you would like to raise at the SSLC, please speak to your student representative, who will present your points at the meeting.

More information about student representation can be found in the student handbook.
