What are Industrial Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (iCASE) Studentships?

Industrial CASE studentships (Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering) allow postgraduate research students to receive high quality research training in collaboration with a commercial or other non-academic partners. The studentships are part-funded by Research Councils together with the partner and include stipend, tuition fees and other project costs.

 

MRC DTP Industrial Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (iCASE) Studentships 2019

The MRC Doctoral Training Partnership (MRC DTP) will award four fully-funded MRC iCASE studentships to support research and training in Biomedical and Translational Science.

Our iCASE studentships are available as full-time (or pro-rata as part-time studentships) 4 year PhD’s (0+4).

Each iCASE studentship will receive the following additional support from the industry partner (if a non-SME partner) or MRC (if a SME partner):

  • £2,500 stipend top up per/annum
  • £1,400 consumables top up per/annum
  • A three-month placement with the industry partner

 

AWARD TYPES & ELIGIBILITY

The MRC DTP will award fully-funded iCASE studentships each year; this includes tuition fees, stipend and bench fee.

Stipend: Students will receive a tax-free stipend for each year of study, this rate will be in line with the MRC’s minimum rates. For 2019/2020 this will be £17,009 per annum. (iCASE studentships will receive an additional £2,500 per/annum top-up from the industry partner)

Bench fees: A generous allowance (£5,300) will be provided for research consumables and for attending UK and international conferences. (iCASE studentships will receive an additional £1,400 per/annum top-up from the industry partner). MRC DTP iCASE Students will also be eligible to apply for the Flexible Supplement Fund.

Eligibility: The MRC funding available supports Home/EU students within standard research council restrictions. EU students are only eligible for a full studentship if they have lived, worked or studied within the UK for three years prior to the funding commencing. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from non-EU candidates.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The programme is very competitive and applicants must have or be predicted to obtain a high-quality BSc. degree with a 1st or a high 2:1, or a master’s qualification at Merit/Distinction grade.

If English is not your first language you will be required to provide evidence that you meet the minimum English requirements of the Faculty [Band D] as prescribed by the university’s English Language requirements. If you are unable to provide this confirmation before applying any offer you are made would be conditional upon you meeting these requirements prior to enrolment and no later than the 31 of August 2019.

MRC DTP iCASE Projects Available

 

Our DTP issues a new call for iCASE projects prior to interviews taking place. The projects available for September 2019 entry will be available on Monday 4th March, 2019. All iCASE projects are available as a straight 4 year PhD. Applicants may apply for one project only.
